I loved these stories. Mansfield is an amazing writer. Her ability to capture the scene around you is stunning. All the stories had something magical to them, but I definitely have my real favourites. Read this selection of stories; utterly brilliant.I adore these short stories. They are just simply stunning.
Mansfield was revered to the point of envy as a writer by Virginia Woolf. Her stories are written in a distinctive style, somehow spare and yet lush, usually accessible and emotionally charged, with extraordinary characters, often so well realised that they take up residence in the reader's consciousness. We got ourselves a favourite author!Loved each and every story. Took notes. Scribbled in the columns. My copy came with blank pages after every story. Its as if Collins expected me to take notes. I felt like I was back in my highschool literature class again. Which is also where I first learnt of Mansfield and her writing. Stories like Her First Ball and The Dolls House that I read as a child now make more sense. The characters are now so much more! Previously the Burrells seemed an elitist
I think I was expecting a focus on the well-heeled middle classes (a la Virginia Woolf and Elizabeth Bowen) and while that is pretty much the environment for most of these stories, there is a surprising focus on the outcast and the marginalised, which tends to show polite society in a poor light. Excellent.
I love Mansfield's stories. She's such a great writer, though I would agree with some of the other reviewers that she would have been greater had she not died young. This books looses one star for me on the editing. I went to a talk by the editor, and she's brilliant. So, I don't really get this book. I don't get the choice of stories, nor the order they were put in. What I get least of all, are the notes. She annotates pack horse, spuds and buggy, but not pinafore. I think the annotation would
